In May of 2008, Gideon decided he wanted to teach the kids online how to draw. Such an ambitious desire for someone five years old. Of course I was ready with the camera to film his art instruction. Here’s a index of all of his videos, and it will be updated in the event that he decides to teach art some more in the future.

Gideon’s Chocolate Painting

Gideon’s Ceramic Train Project

A while ago I bought Gideon those paints he had been asking for as well as a 6-piece ceramic train set and a wooden car.

Here’s a shot of all of the stuff we bought. A total of just $23 at Walmart… not bad.

Gideon had asked me to take a photo of him with all his art supplies, which I did. Just imagine a photo fo this little blonde haired boy with a big big smile on his face here. LOL

Gideon got to work painting his train with a blue glitter roof. Mr. Gideon adores the glitter paints.

Due to the large amount of photos I thought that the smaller views were best to add. That way you could see side by side the progress for each train. He painted these all in one night.

During the time I was taking my art lesson from Gideon the art teacher, dad came down and painted too. Well, he didn’t seem to keen on the idea at first protesting that he can’t draw. I said “So what” you have some artistic ability let’s see it! I thought that it’d be a great family thing to do as Gideon and I were already painting, and I thought it was good for Gideon to see how art styles vary.

So, down comes Clint on the floor by us. He says what do I paint on? I handed him a thick piece of cardboard that was the back of an old, falling apart sketchpad.

He went to work painting a river, then trees, benches, rocks and animals. All the while Gideon is doing a similar landscape on his 16 X 20 canvasboard.

Unfortunately I didn’t take photos as the paintings progressed as I was painting Horton at the time.

So what did we wind up with in the end?

Clint’s landscape, which is based on Parfrey’s Glen – a state park that we love to hike and photograph.

The blue is the creek that runs through Parfrey’s Glen. The dots along it are trees. The brown is the pathway. Near the top of the creek are 3 brown benches. There’s a brown rock up there too. The green is the grassy area. There’s a deer and a bear there… and there’s deer poop. *shakes head* Boys, lol.

Gideon’s landscape which is based off of Clint’s… without the pooping deer, thankfully.

Gideon’s creek is green. The dots along it are trees. The brown and silver are paths. He has two rocks and one bench.

I think they did a GREAT job, and Gideon learned a new type of painting: Landscapes.

See Clint? You paint well AND inspired Gideon.

Gideon’s Art Journal: I Can Make My Own, Too!

Last night Gideon was not his usual playful Pintendo-loving self. (By the way “Pintendo” is what he calls our Nintendo, lol) instead he relaxed most of the day. Later he did play some “Pintendo” but more so he pulled out his Lightning McQueen notebook (A Christmas gift) and began to draw, and draw and draw some more!

Here’s what he came up with: (By the way these are all in the middle of the notebook, lol)

This is the front and back cover of the notebook. It’s just one we got at one of those Dollar stores in NY for a stocking stuffer.

His first art in it? Well, a tracing of his hand and foot, of course.

Then he traced his knee (left) and drew a music note. I forgot what he called the music note. It was something like music word.

Then he drew some money (left) and a self portrait. Awww! He put a shirt on it (red – his favorite color) and gave him lots of hair, because he has lots of hair, lol! (He said all of this as he pushed his own hair around on his head)

Then he tried to write the number 1 and write One like daddy taught him to do. He did need some help spelling One, though. Then he did an 8 and tried to write eight, but he ran out of space and was mad at how he wrote his “g”. The he wrote “HFF” and Off. No one helped him spell off.

Then he did MNO POP. He exclaimed Hop on Pop! (A Dr. Seuss book we read from the library a while ago) Then he did a line on the right side.

The he drew a ladder and a W, but his W was actually a M, lol. So I told the M to turn around. I showed him how when the M turned around it made a W. And of course, I had to tell the W to turn around and show him that it’s a M again. Oh he liked that, lol. Then he added three O’s to spell. Woooo! LOL

This I think is an abstract. He didn’t tell me what it was after like he always does.
